Americans can claim free money from $2.8million hair settlement - see if you're eligible
ELIGIBLE students may get their share of $2.8million after a cosmetology program agreed to a payout.
The Douglas J. Institute is an Aveda cosmetology school for those looking to get into a career in hair, esthiology, massage therapy, and more.
The school has locations across Michigan, Tennessee, and Illinois.
The company, Douglas J. Holdings, has agreed to pay $2.8million in order to resolve claims it made students work off the clock at its student clinic locations.
Students are alleging that they and other students were considered employees for purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
They claim that they were performing specific cleaning, laundry, restocking, and/or sales tasks during their time enrolled as students in the student clinic.

Despite agreeing to settle, Douglas J. Holdings has denied any wrongdoing.
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?
Student who attended the cosmetology programs in Michigan and participated in the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and/or Salon Life courses in 2012 through 2022 may apply for the cash.
While no payment estimates are available, those eligible may receive cash based on the number of qualifying hours they worked.
The Settlement Administrator will determine each person’s qualifying hours and qualifying time based on the information given when filing a claim and then verifying in company records.

Just note that the qualifying time for each person filing a claim will be capped at no more than 10 percent of their qualifying enrollment.
Plus, any payment will be subject to applicable taxes.
All claims must be filed by November 24, 2023.
HOW TO FILE
Those who wish to file a claim must do so online or via mail.
For those looking to file online, you must have your Class Member ID to log into the site.
This may be found on the email you received, or on a postcard that you received in the mail.
If you can't locate your Class Member ID or did not receive one, contact the Settlement Administrator at (833) 933-9669.
After logging in, fill out the requested information, type your name in the signature block, and then click the "submit" button.
Once your form has been successfully submitted, the site will take you to a screen with your claim number.
For those who would like to mail in their Claim Form instead, you may download, print, complete, and mail a paper Claim Form.
All claims must be submitted online no later than, Friday, November 24, 2023.
Those mailing theirs in must postmark them no later than that same date.
